Gunpowder, treason and plot.
Well, okay, this references the attempted blowing-up of Parliament and the King (James the VI of Scotland and I of England) in 1605, but could, with a few changes, represent the Covenanters' fight against the King's (Charles I, son of James the VI and I) proposed changes to the liturgy.
Covenants, treason, and kirk.
Okay, tenuous link to post theme is tenuous, but I'm going to roll with it... because I took another walk to try and find the Covenanters Cave the other day.
I started off in the accustomed way: up Clatto Hill, through Blebo and on to Kemback. I have to say that the road between Blebo and Kemback never ceases to please me, and even more so when Mother Nature is painting in broad strokes of Autumn.
Even Jenny's Steps look inviting with a generous application of copper and gold! (As a swift aside, Jenny is supposed to have lived behind the church, had a small still in her garden, and would sell her home-made whisky to the locals!!)
Nope. Picturesque falls, but no cave! (I've since discovered that it's literally half-way up a sheer rock-face overlooking the road, so there's a pretty good chance I won't be reporting from there any time soon...)
So I headed back up through Kemback to admire the colourful views up the hill from the ruined church,
climbed up the side of my favourite patch of hill, before heading the three miles home again!
